Blue-Raid

January 1, 2009

So it is now apparent that the Blue-Ray format has “won the high deff battle” to become the next geration of home video player and disk. Blue-Ray may have won this battle, but it won a battle within a larger loosing war. Before you run out a drop a couple C-notes on a new Blue-Ray player and all new disks for your collection think first about the future.

Historically our video formats have evolved predictablly from one new hardware to the next. Bata Max (my personal favorite) to VHS, to DVD, to… Blue Ray? Perhaps not. Hardware is qickly becoming a thing of the past as i-tunes, i-pods, and i-whatever has hit the scene. Video rental companies such as Netflix and Blockbuster are now allowing users to download video files instantly (although never “instant”) to their computers/televisions.

The future of video may be much softer than in the past. Movie collections are moving to video files instead of disks on a shelf. Perhaps your next video purchase should be a download instead of a new Blue-Disk.
